Forbidden Planet

Dir. Fred M. Wilcox | USA | 1956 | 98 mins | (U)
Walter Pidgeon, Anne Francis, Leslie Nielsen, Warren Stevens, Jack Kelly, Richard Anderson, Earl Holliman, and Robby the Robot as himself

The crew of the star cruiser C-57D journeys for more than a year to the distant planet of Altair-4. Their mission: to discover what happened to a colony posted there and from whom no word has come for years. Commander Adams and his men find just two survivors: Professor Edward Morbius and his beautiful daughter, Altaira. With their aid of Robby the Robot they have transformed Altair-4 into a paradise. But while Morbius has explored the remnants of the long-dead Krell civilisation, he also harbours a dark secret. Soon monsters seem to be abroad… This is a film notable for many things: a breakthrough electronic soundtrack, stunning sets and a surprising performance from a young Leslie Nielsen. Loosely based on Shakespeare’s The TempestForbidden Planet is one of the all-time great science fiction films.
