Deemed worthy of a Hollywood sequel by Steven Soderbergh and George Clooney, Tarkovsky’s adaptation of Polish writer Stanislaw Lem’s 1961 novel is an ambiguous and enigmatic sci-fi epic that considers the issues of love and perception in the depths of space. Through haunting and startlingly beautiful imagery, scientist and cosmonaut Kris Kelvin (Banionis) finds his dead wife – a victim of suicide – mysteriously resurrected by an alien force on the planet Solaris that seeks to communicate with him through his love for her. Widely acclaimed as one of the greatest science fiction movies ever made, Solarisis a long and often confusing examination of the nature of love. It is also a must-see for any self-respecting sci-fi buff.
