Lost Soul – The Doomed Journey of Richard Stanley’s Island of Dr. Moreau
LOST SOUL – THE DOOMED JOURNEY OF RICHARD STANLEY’S ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU
Dir. David Gregory USA 2014 97 mins (TBC)
Documentary with: Richard Stanley, Fairuza Balk, Peter Elliott, Marco Hofschneider, Edward R. Pressman, Robert Shaye, Tim Sullivan
In 1996, with two well-regarded low budget films – Hardware and Dust Devil – under his belt, director Richard Stanley was ready to make the leap to the big league with his dream project: a lavish adaptation of H.G. Wells’ The Island Of Dr. Moreau. With a cast including Marlon Brando and Val Kilmer, Stanley began production only to be replaced – after just three days of shooting – with veteran John Frankenheimer. With a cast out of control and a script in constant flux, the production became notorious and the final film a famous flop. Reminiscent of classic documentaries like Hearts of Darkness and Burden of Dreams, Lost Soul is a hugely entertaining examination of how a film shoot can go so catastrophically wrong.
FANTASTIQ is delighted to welcome director David Gregory for a post-screening Q+A.
